Helpful Moving and Packing Tips

Moving is an art and at Handyman Services we take the time to walk through your home with you and plan a successful outcome. Our men will pad the door jams; use appropriate floor runners; shrink wrap and blanket your items when necessary to insure they are moved safely.

Some good tips for our customers are as follows:

  • Make sure your drive way is clear of snow, sanded and our vehicles can gain direct access to your home
  • Make sure your walkways are clear of all hazards, pets are contained and children understand that our movers will be moving heavy items quickly and they need a clear pathway

If you decide to do the packing yourself, these are some packing basics to keep in mind:

  • Make sure you have the proper materials: packing paper (plain newsprint), 2-inch packing tape, masking tape, scissors, permanent markers and colored dots (representing different rooms)
  • Follow a timetable - people often underestimate how long it takes to pack!
  • Start with items you won't need right away, such as belongings stored in the basement, garage or attic
  • Packing room-by-room will help you stay organized
  • As you complete a room, sort packed boxes by weight (light, medium, heavy) to make loading the moving van easier and quicker - limit cartons to a maximum weight of 50 pounds

For best results, have your mover pack:

  • Marble or glass tabletops
  • Heavy wall ornaments, mirrors and pictures
  • Bulky, fragile items like large trophies, statues, chandeliers, etc.

There are several items that can not be put on a truck. These include hazardous materials such as explosives, compressed gases, flammable liquids, poisons or corrosive materials. Common examples include:

  • Paints and paint thinners
  • Gasoline or lighter fluid
  • Oxygen bottles or propane cylinders
  • Automotive repair and maintenance chemicals

Other items that cannot be placed on a truck:

  • Firearms or matches
  • Plants
  • Medicines and Jewelry
